Interview with Bernard Griffin
What is your favorite camera lens and why?
Using the 24-70mm allows me to tell the story and not worry about changing focal length.
How long have you been a photographer? What got you started?
I have been photographing for seven years now. I honestly got started by accident. I brought a used camera for a vacation. From there, I just picked it up and found it fascinating. As for the question of why weddings? Well, I love it! I get to be around a couple when they are first married, which honestly makes me a better husband. I can see the joy of new love every day, which allows me to smile.
How did you establish and define your shooting and editing style?
I bring a mix of photojournalism and magazine/editorial photography. I don’t believe in posing my clients for the entire wedding. I want to tell their story. At the same time, I love creating wall art that will last on my client’s walls for years.
How do you differentiate yourself from the photographer down the street?
I don’t put myself in a box. I love to create moments special to them. I love capturing genuine moments and knowing how to pose for those few moments. I can work in any situation, from daylight to nighttime. I am confident that I can create pictures that will stand out. I don’t need perfect lighting but give me time, and I am sure I can create art.
What is the best part about being a photographer?
The best part of photography is the people. Being a part of people’s lives and creating moments that will last forever always stood out to me.
What are your sources of photography inspiration?
I get inspiration from everywhere. I love looking at work from some of my fellow photographers as well as movies and different artwork that I see around. Also, most importantly, I get inspiration from my clients and I try to incorporate that into each photo.
What do you think your keys to success are in this industry?
To be open and willing to improve. Work on your weaknesses as much as you work on your strengths.
What advice would you give someone wanting to learn photography?
Practice and always ask yourself what you did right and what you did wrong after each picture. Be better after every session.
Other than your wedding work, what type of photography is your favorite and why?
Wildlife, I love watching animals.
