Make sure and read step 2 again. Basically what you can do is just keep selecting areas, added to the over all selection or in this can what you are really doing is subtracting from the selection. 

By doing this you can create just about any custom shape you need. Image #2 depicts this. If you notice that shape is made up of ovals just added on top of each other.
